Is there any way to override my PC soundcard with headphones plugged into USB and NOT to have the speakers on?

The problem: My PC is on the floor. If I want to plug my standard headphones in to use video conferencing or to listen to loud music whilst the rest of the family watch TV I have to practise contortionism every time I want to get to the headphone plug.

Is there either any kind of cable that could be plugged into the headphone plug but only turn to headphones when they are connected to it (so making it like a dormant headphone extension) so that I can listen on speakers most of the time.
OR a USB device which, when plugged in will stop sound coming from the speakers and divert straight to headphones?
I have found USB to headphone devices but they leave the speakers active.

Yes dead easy. Buy a 3 mm extension lead and plug that into the jack socket and have the other end on your desk and plug the head phones in that.

It will work exactly the same way as it does now, and you wont have to bend down.

You can leave it plugged in permanently if you want, because when you unplug the head phones the normal speakers will come back on.

They are not that expensive. The last one I bought years ago was about £3.
